Prevention & Intervention

PREVENTION

One of the icons of our work is a device called a baby safe. Check it out under Design Concept.

We manage some of our own baby safes, but also network with existing groups in high risk areas, training and equipping them to install and manage their own baby safe. COULD YOU USE A BABY SAFE IN YOUR AREA? Contact us to learn more about joining The Baby Safe Network.

Our growing network includes baby safes in Sun Valley, Jeffrey’s Bay, Pietermaritzberg, Wellington, Somerset West, Johannesburg, Hermanus, Nordbrug, and upcoming in Ocean View & Masiphumelele. The network has also gone international now, with a baby safe in Swaziland.

  • Baby Safe counters infanticide by providing alternatives to desperate mothers. We intervene in South Africa’s baby dumping crisis by providing a drop off point (the baby safe), where a mother can leave her baby anonymously, legally, and safely, 24 hours a day.
  • We staff the local hospital with a pre-abortion counselor for all women scheduled for weekly abortions. We educate women; most women don’t know the consequences of abortion, the procedure, that they have options, or that there is hope for healing after such a life event. We get to follow up with these women with pregnancy support and discipleship.
  • We network to provide babies with immediate and excellent care at local private baby homes, safety families and then with permanent, loving, and Christian families through adoption. (http://www.abbaadoptions.co.za)
  • Our staff seeks out audiences with local youth groups, and public schools to do sex education and workshops on sexual safety and purity. Please contact us to book a prevention presentation.
  • A Baby Safe staff member speaks to every woman booked to have their baby at the local government hospital. One of our social workers gives a presentation to these mothers twice a week; we highlight our services and encourage self worth, adoption, family planning, and infant care.
  • Our staff makes a similar presentation once a week at the women and children’s clinic in Masiphumelele, holding an audience of at-risk mothers, many whom have just learned they are pregnant.

IT IS OUR AIM TO CONNECT WITH AT RISK WOMEN BEFORE THEY GET TO THE POINT OF DUMPING THEIR BABY.

INTERVENTION:

  • Baby Safe is equipped to intervene with abandoned babies that are found alive. We work with social services, the police, and other community resources to provide immediate and safe care for abandoned, abused or neglected babies.
